Optimism and Mental Health

The Bible instructs us to be optimistic and avoid negative thoughts. Philippians 4:8, “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”

It turns out the optimistic thoughts stimulate certain parts of the brain. These areas are dormant on brain imaging in depressed patients, but light up when optimistic thoughts occur. This of course leads to less depression and better mental health. It’s therefore easy to see why we should think on positive things; it’s good for your health. This week choose to spend at least 30 minutes thinking on “good things.”
