Things to keep the mind sharp

With Alzheimer’s and other dementias increasing, we are all interested in how this might be prevented. In the May/June 2011 issue of the magazine Vibrant Life, Sara Rowe shares 6 things we all can do to keep our minds sharp. We will cover 5 of them.

1. Work! Studies show that for many retirement resulted in a decline in cognitive abilities. (The ability to think, reason, remember and learn.) Staying active through volunteering and other activities that keeps us thinking did not show this decline.
2. A Schedule! Those who had a full but not overbooked schedule did best. Having a full day at least five days a week seemed to be best.
3. Rest! The mind needs rest and fatigue will cause memory problems.
4. Exercise! Daily walking or more vigorous activities is good for the brain.
5. Games! Many doctors recommend games like crossword puzzles, Sudoku and others, to exercise memory skills, reasoning and to promote quicker processing.

The Scriptures not only endorse these findings but with its study, we will maintain the sharpest minds possible!
