Nearly everyone knows that obesity is hazardous to one’s health. Medical studies conclude that obesity increases the risk of hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, gallbladder disease and cancer; but a recent article in the British Medical Journal states the lack of exercise is worse than obesity. “Dr Richard Weiler, a specialist registrar in sport medicine, has said that a lack of exercise is the root cause of more illnesses such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, mental health problems and high blood pressure than body fat. Writing in the British Medical Journal, he called for public health policies to focus more on increasing physical activity, and added that spending huge amounts of money on treating obesity was the wrong way forward.” We have known for over 100 years, “Neglecting to exercise the entire body, or a portion of it, will bring on morbid conditions. Inaction of any of the organs of the body will be followed by a decrease in size and strength of the muscles, and will cause the blood to flow sluggishly through the blood-vessels.” (HL 28.2)
