Exercise and Atherosclerosis

A study reported in the journal, Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, Dec. 2009 issue shows how exercise reduced plaque in an animal study. Genetically identical lab rats were both fed a high cholesterol and fat diet. One group was exercised for 50 minutes each day, the other group was not. After 6 months the arteries of both groups were examined. Plaques similar to those in humans were found. But in the exercise group there was a 30% reduction in these plaques and the plaques were more stable which reduces the tendency to rupture by 58%. The study shows the benefits of exercise on prevention of heart disease and stroke. With a heart healthy vegetarian diet, it’s easy to see why cardiovascular diseases are known to be preventable diseases. So why not get moving for better heart health.
