Many are using herbs in an effort to improve their health. Ginkgo biloba has been shown to be beneficial in treating intermittent claudication (cramping in the calf muscles with exercise), vertigo (a spinning sensation due to circulatory causes) and tinnitus (ringing in the ears if due to a circulatory cause).
Gingko has also been reported to be beneficial for preventing and treating Alzheimer disease, but a study in The Lancet Neurology, October 2102 shows that it has no significant benefit. 3000 older adults where involved in the study and the extract for Gingko was no better than placebo in the prevention or treatment of Alzheimer disease.
Gingko is not without possible side-effects which include: lowering seizure threshold in persons with seizure disorder; causing excessive bleeding in persons taking aspirin, Coumadin or NSAIDS; and elevation of blood pressure in those taking diuretics. Unless you have specific medical needs, herbs should primarily be used in food preparation. And PLEASE let your health are provider know what herbs, vitamins or other supplements you may be taking; for better health and health care!
