Salt & children

We bear positive testimony against tobacco, spirituous liquors, snuff, tea, coffee, flesh-meats, butter, spices, rich cakes, mince pies, a large amount of salt, and all exciting substances used as articles of food.” (TSDF 104.5) God in His mercy warned us of the hazards of “a large amount of salt.” A study of September 6, 2007 reported “that children as young as four are eating so much salt that they are suffering from high blood pressure. Parents are being urged to cut down their children’s daily salt intake to prevent them suffering heart disease or strokes as young adults. The alert was raised by new research, published in the Journal of Hypertension, which found that children eating the highest amount of salt had the highest blood pressure.” But you say, “I don’t add salt to the foods I cook.” But unless you are not eating processed foods and are not eating in restaurants often, you and your children are getting too much salt. Researchers say, “The message for parents is to check labels, especially on foods such as breakfast cereals and snack products, which they may not expect to contain high levels of salt, and choose the lower salt options.” A 3 year old does not need to consume more than 3 grams of salt per day. A 6 year old should not have more than 5 grams per day. One package of Ramen Noodles contains over 3.7 grams of salt. So parents, please read those food labels! Doing so just may save your child’s life!
