Ps. 17:8, “Keep me as the apple of the eye, hide me under the shadow of thy wings,” “Parents, guard the principles and habits of your children as the apple of the eye.” (AH. 470) Eight times in the Bible the word apple is found, with 7 out of 8 referring to “the apple of the eye.” Obviously apples were very precious in Bible times and guess what, they are valuable today. A recent article in the Medical News Today, October 3, 2012 recounts that apples reduce the LDL (bad) cholesterol because of their high concentration of soluble fiber. A 3 1/2 ounce raw apple contains 19 g. protein, no cholesterol, no sodium and <1 g of fat. Research done at Florida State University showed that an apple a day lead to a 23% reduction in LDL cholesterol in 6 months. (With no side-effects) Apples especially reduced oxidized LDL cholesterol which is the main culprit in causing damage to the lining of arteries leading to heart attacks. As God’s people are the “apple” of His eye, let’s keep an apple before our eyes (and in our mouth) every day.
