“And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.” (Gen. 2:15) This text emphasizes the importance of work. The Creator placed man in a garden to work; to dress it and keep it; and if it was important for man in his sinless state to work, then it’s even more important for man in our sinful state to work.
In John 5:17 the Bible states, “But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.” So should we! “The custom of supporting men and women in idleness by private gifts or church money encourages them in sinful habits, and this course should be conscientiously avoided. Every man, woman, and child should be educated to do practical, useful work.” (TDG 20) Studies show that work improves self respect and confidence along with improving ones health.
No wonder Paul through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit exhorts in 2 Thessalonians 3:10, “For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.” Work in a blessing from God; let’s take advantage of that blessing!
