Vitamin D is thought to be the wonder vitamin of the decade. It seems that everyone is boarding the vitamin D bandwagon; but there is lingering doubts about vitamin D supplementation benefits. A study in the October 3, 2012 Journal of the American Medical Association examined the effect of vitamin D supplementation on the prevention of upper respiratory infections (the common cold). Researchers reported that after 18 months patients in New Zealand with “low” vitamin D levels when given supplemental vitamin D to raise the levels to “normal” had the same number of upper respiratory infections as those given placebo. This study demonstrates that vitamin D supplementation had no beneficial effects on the prevention of the common cold. This is another demonstration that supplements are not the same as getting your nutrients from natural sources. So if you are concerned about getting enough vitamin D, try the sun. And don’t forget the “Sun of Righteousness.” (Mal. 4:2)
