I recently received a call requesting that I write a medical excuse for taking the flu shot based upon religious beliefs. It was explained to the caller that this request could not be granted because vaccines have saved millions of lives and our religion does not in any way preclude taking a flu shot. We are in a substantial flu season and the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention list 3 simple steps that can be taken to prevent the spread of this illness. 1) Get the flu vaccine. This is recommended for children over 6 months of age, adults over 65, and those who have a chronic health problem like asthma, diabetes, heart disease, etc. (Recent studies suggest that even people with egg allergies can take this vaccine). 2) Take everyday preventive steps like: staying at home if you are sick and for 24 hours after a fever has subsided, washing your hands with soap & water routinely, covering your mouth when you cough or sneeze and disposing the tissue used. 3) If you do get sick see your health care provider for treatments that may be helpful. Additionally, keep your immune system strong by practicing God’s Health Laws! “And when we have done our best, we can trust God for the rest!”
