Over the past 2-3 decades scientist have stressed the need for preventing infections through the thorough washing of ones hands. This has proven to be very effective in preventing the spread of viral and bacterial infections. And in an effort to further prevent infections, soap manufacturers have included antibiotics in their products. But the spread of more virulent (harmful) bacteria seems to be on the increase. Why?
A recently published report from the University of Michigan School of Public Health has concluded that, “Antibacterial soaps do not provide a benefit above and beyond plain soaps for generally healthy people living in the community,” researcher Allison Aiello, PhD, tells WebMD.”
“Washing your hands is extremely important for preventing the spread of infectious illness, especially at critical points like after using the toilet, changing the baby, or handling raw foods. But consumers can’t assume that antibacterial soaps are better for this than other soaps.” (Health News – August 22, 2007)
So what’s the take home message? Be diligent in washing your hands throughout the day to prevent infectious diseases and don’t worry about the type of soap used!
