When sugar substitutes are not sweet

“Far too much sugar is ordinarily used in food. Cakes, sweet puddings, pastries, jellies, jams, are active causes of indigestion. Especially harmful are the custards and puddings in which milk, eggs, and sugar are the chief ingredients. The free use of milk and sugar taken together should be avoided.” (M.H. 302)

You have heard about the detrimental effects of sugar. How it is devoid of nutrients and instead of building up our systems, it robs our bodies of nutrients needed for health. Inspiration validates this belief. But what about sugar substitutes? Sweet’N Low is thought by some to be linked to bladder cancer. Aspartame marketed as ‘NutraSweet’, ‘Equal’, and ‘Spoonful’ has been implicated in memory loss, lupus and MS and other diseases. But now there is a “new kid on the block,” Splenda. And while some believe this new sweetener is toxic, no known studies to date have proven this. But there is a cause of concern. In a court hearing the makers of Splenda are being sued by The Sugar Association for false advertising.

“A hearing began on November 19, 2007, after three years of filing. Sugar Association officials have taken issue with the marketing slogan “Made from sugar, so it tastes like sugar.” Sucralose, the sweetening ingredient in Splenda, is a man-made chlorocarbon; a complex process is required to convert sucrose into a number of different intermediary chemicals, including the use of phosgene gas, a deadly weapon used during World War II, as a chlorinating agent.” (LawyersAndSettlements.com November 19, 2007)

Studies also show that all artificial sweeteners are appetite stimulants and lead to weight gain. Eliminating the very reason for using them.

So what should one do? Eat less sweets! Use natural sweeteners like the herb Stevia, or the less refined sweeteners Sugar in the Raw, Florida Crystals or Sucanat. Remembering the Word of God’s instructions: “My son, eat thou honey, because it is good; and the honeycomb, which is sweet to thy taste,” (Prov. 24:14) and Prov. 25:16, “Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee, lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it.” Remember, we are not instructed to avoid sugar but that we are eating far to much!
